Introduction
Do you know that dupatta called as uttariya in ancient period were both man and woman use to carry it.were women use to cover their heads or carry on shoulder.
Dupatta word originated from most ancient language sanskrit du+ patta where du means double and patta means piece of cloth, dupatta define as a piece of cloth made of light fabric.
History
In mohanjodaro of harrapa civilization got evidence from statue of a priest,in left shoulder carried a shawl type material. That proves that dupatta used in harrapa civilization.
After the invasion of Alexander the great,it brought transform in dressing style, inspied from Greek culture were Greek and halla culture women use to wear stoles or palla, or in public place use to cover her head. Inspiration from greek culture changed dripping style of saree and dupatta.
Maurya era
In philosophy of Buddhist and jain religion,peace given first priority that's why antaria given look of bhairnivasni and uttariya became dupatta.
Rajput and mughal era 800AD-1761AD in these era dupatta used as cover upper body and head,it wore with ghagra choli and salwar kameez, covering head from dupatta is to denote respect for elders.

In these list of dupatta their is one more dupatta which have a very interesting history, Hyderabad ka khada dupatta, it believe that 1601ce- 1700ce, mughal queen noor jahan use to invite Turkish and Persian artists and craftsmen to ready a royal dress and their was special kind of embroidery for the queens of mughal empire, after passing of time the governor of nizam's, nizam ul mulk announced in his rule. There is a versatile style of carrying dupatta even celebrities like to carry it and if we,are talking about dupatta how we can forgot phulkari dupatta the proud of Punjab of the popular dupatta's of India, the word phulkari originates by merging two words where Phool means flowers or kari means embroidery or akari means shape.phulkari is a special kind of embroidery technique in which floral themes are used, in previous time these art or embroidery used for only making shawls or dupatta,but now a days phulkari embroidery used in making saree or salwar kameez.its mentioned in history that phulkari embroidery came from central asia with jatt community but some scholars believe that that in 15th century in Punjab. But there is no proper documentation about the origin of these embroidery. Even some scholars believe it originated from gulkari art of Persia. The early reference of word phulkari in written records in famous 18th century punjabi folklore heer ranjhana by waris shah. One more reason that phulkari dupatta never developed for the purpose of selling,the art of phulkari dupatta passing generations to next generations.yes, either dupatta is just pieces of light fabric but without these it's tough to imagine our outfits, most of the dresses are incomplete without these dupatta..
